M. D . here. Different people metabolize drugs differently (this is called pharmacokinetics). This is why a drug (or two drugs in this case) can have different effects on different people. Claritin D is loratadine (antihistamine) + pseudoephedrine (decongestant). On its own, loratadine may cause mild sleepiness or very rarely excitability.
Pharmacist here, yeah Claritin is pretty much worthless. Zyrtec and allegra are much more effective but carry a greater risk of side effects . Benadryl is even more potent but as you said, knocks you out like a drunk 14 year old.
Yes. I can’t take any of the – D medications because of that very reason. I went to my doctor about 12 years ago when I had a script for Claritin – D with insomnia and this is what he told me to do: take Claritin – D 12 hour in the morning and Claritin regular 12 hour at night when things were prescription, but now that everything’s OTC, no brands make a regular 12 hour it seems.

It made me nervous, jittery, and with extreme insomnia. I did notice that my nasal congestion improved, but I can’t tolerate the side effects.

I bet you’re taking Claritin D , which contains a decongestant that does make you sleepy. The regular Claritin doesn’t have anything in it that should causes side effects . BTW, I took Claritin for years for my annual Spring allergy, but switched last year to Allegra because of insurance considerations, and the Allegra didn’t work.
